Description
The gatehouse at Pirton Grange is a structure dating from the 16th or early 17th century. It features a timber frame built on a recessed battered brick bridge structure that spans a former moat. The front is roughcast with impressed decoration, while the sides and rear display exposed timbers with a chevron pattern infill between the studs. The gatehouse has a steep old red tile roof and is a small square building with two storeys, facing east. The wide eastern entrance is framed by a narrow architrave and features 18th-century panelled double gates that include a wicket gate. Above the entrance, there is a small two-light casement window. The carriageway is off-centre to the south, with an enclosed stair leading to the upper floor on the north side. This gatehouse is an unusual survival, and supports for a former drawbridge have been discovered during excavations.
