Description
The building, designed in 1911 by H Clapham Lander, was originally called 'Holmsgarth' and was part of the Letchworth Co-operative Houses. This scheme was promoted by Ebenezer Howard as an experiment in co-operative living for professional people. The plan was for a quadrangle of flats and houses, although only the first two phases were completed. Ebenezer Howard himself resided at Holmsgarth from 1911 until 1920.
The north-west front, facing Broadway Circus, is two storeys high, with a prominent three-storey central feature flanked by towers with concave pyramidal roofs. The building has tiled roofs and brick stacks. The walls are roughcast above a brick ground floor; the centre of the facade has brickwork to both the ground and first floors. Brick pilaster strips emphasize the quoins of the towers. The windows are two- and three-light casements with tile labels which form horizontal strings. Ground floor windows of the central section have round-arched heads. The main entrance features side lights and a hood supported by cut brackets. A glazed covered walkway links the range to two-storey terraces and flats arranged around a quadrangle at the rear.
