Description
Arunside is a pair of houses built in 1904-1905 by architects B Parker and R Unwin for their own use. Unwin lived at "Laneside" from 1904 to 1906, while Parker moved into "Crabby Corner" in 1906 and resided there until 1935. The building is two storeys high with a five-bay south-west front featuring gabled first-floor dormers. It has hipped, tiled roofs with moulded red brick stacks in the Yeoman Tudor style. The walls are roughcast with some red brickwork, and there are mullioned casement windows with glazing bars.
At the south-east corner, there is a three-storey sleeping tower with a hipped roof and French windows on the ground and first floors, the latter leading to a balcony. The second floor has retractable windows that create an open porch for summer sleeping. This tower, added by Parker in 1913, reflects the Healthy-Life movement characteristic of Letchworth and shows influences from German medieval architecture. The interior features good detailing in the Arts and Crafts style. Arunside is listed as Grade II* for its distinctive style and its historical connections to the two principal architects of the Garden City.
