Description

This is a house located at No. 10 Bushey Grange Road, known as Tilehurst, built between 1903 and 1904. It was designed by C.F.A. Voysey for Miss E. Somers and constructed by Miskins. The house features roughcast brick with stone dressings and has a machine-tiled roof, showcasing a simple Arts and Crafts style.

The building is two storeys with an attic and has a steeply pitched gable facing the road, with a catslide roof over an entrance lean-to on the left. The entrance includes a part-glazed door set in a round-arched head with a tile drip mould. The ground floor has an asymmetrical arrangement of windows in a 1:4:1 pattern, while the first floor has a 1:4 arrangement. Both floors feature horizontal rows of multi-paned wrought iron casements with stone surrounds and mullions, along with continuous tile drip moulds. There are smaller tile courses above ventilation slits in the attic, and battered buttresses at the corners.

On the right side of the house, the entrance is sheltered by a large projecting hood supported by curved braces. Towards the rear, there is a 5-light casement similar to the front, along with a 2-light flat-topped dormer. The left return has a 3-light casement and a dormer behind the entrance lean-to. At the rear, there are 3 and 4-light windows on the ground floor and a 4-light window on the first floor, all featuring continuous tile drip moulds. A single large axial ridge stack is located just in front of the center of the house, topped with a segmental tiled cap. The interior has not been inspected.
