Description
No. 15 West Street is a house dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of yellow stock brick in Flemish bond and features a Welsh slated roof with broad eaves supported by paired shallow brackets. The roof is hipped over a rear outshoot and range, and there are yellow brick chimneystacks. The house has a central staircase plan.
The exterior is two storeys high. On the first floor, there are three recessed 12-pane sash windows, each set under slightly cambered arches with painted stone sills. A plat band runs along the first-floor level. The ground floor has two similar windows flanking a central doorway, which features a six-panel door with raised and fielded panels and bolection moulded surrounds. This door is recessed and flanked by fluted quarter Doric columns, topped by a traceried fanlight with circle and petal motifs, all set within a double semicircular rubbed brick arched recess. Three Portland stone steps lead up to the door, with the floor level corresponding to the line of a stucco plinth.
At the rear, there are French windows with large panes and margin glazing on the right. The rear outshoot forms a lower two-storey range, which has nine-pane sashes on the first floor and altered fenestration on the ground floor; this part of the building is shared with No. 17 next door. The interior has not been inspected.
