Description
No. 9 West Street is a house that has been converted to a fully residential property, originally built in the 17th century with alterations from the 18th century and a 19th-century outshut. The building features a timber frame with plaster and an old tiled roof, topped by a central square red brick chimney stack with four flues.
The exterior consists of two storeys and attics, following a lobby entry plan with one room on each side of the central stack. On the first floor, there are three nearly flush-set sash windows with six-pane divided glazing, each surrounded by architraves. The ground floor includes a 12-pane sash window on the left, a central six-flush panel door framed by an early 19th-century reeded surround, a cast-iron oval-pattern traceried fanlight above, and a flat hood supported by cut-profiled console brackets. To the right, there is a 19th-century shopfront with a window that has been subdivided with modern mullions and transoms, featuring a pilaster surround, a moulded sill above a panelled stallriser, and a perforated iron ventilator panel above. An entry on the right has a half-glazed door with a plain-glazed fanlight above, and the fascia has projecting ends with a lead flat top, supported by cut consoles. The roof is adorned with two hipped casement dormers, and at the rear, there is a two-storey outshut from the 19th century.
Inside, the property features a tight winder stair with stick balusters and a moulded handrail against the stack. There are two-panel doors with scotia architraves, and a fitted dresser from the 18th century is located in the rear ground floor room. The attics are ceiled at collar level, with visible studwork and downward curved braces on the end wall, while the roof structure is concealed.
