Description

This is a 17th-century house, altered in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is timber-framed and plastered, with an old tiled roof extending from deep eaves, a prominent red brick stack on the rear right (east) side, and a rear outshut. The house has two storeys and attics, with a two-bay wide front. The first floor has two flush-set 12-pane sash windows, each with a projecting architrave surround and a projecting plaster bead above the ground-floor window heads. The ground floor has two sash windows and a central doorway with an 8-panelled door, flanked by pilasters and a simple pediment. A carriage access has been created on the left, enclosed by boarded doors, and the roof has two gabled dormers. At the rear, the windows are largely 20th-century replacements, with one mullion and transom casement on the ground floor of the rear outshut.

The interior has been significantly altered on the ground floor, including the insertion of the carriageway, which exposes 17th-century studwork with primary bracing. A late 20th-century staircase cuts through a moulded beam. A central post with a long jowl and chamfer is visible against the rear wall on the first floor. A bedroom on the first floor front right (east) contains an early 19th-century fireplace surround with reed and paterae decoration, and a late 17th-century cupboard alongside with wrought-iron hinges. There are two attics, though the access staircase no longer exists, and the floors are wide-boarded.

Historically, the rear yard contained a range of tenements in the 19th century, which were cleared in the 1930s. The carriageway was created to provide vehicular access in place of a previous twitchell passage.
