Description
This is a house located at 25 West Street in Hertford, built in the early to mid 19th century. It is constructed from yellow-grey stock brick in Flemish bond, featuring a stucco doorcase and plinth, with a Welsh slated roof. The building has two yellow brick chimneystacks with bands and oversailing courses, topped with orange clay pots, with the right-hand chimney being taller to accommodate the second floor of the adjoining property at No. 27.
The house has a central staircase plan and a three-bay facade that is slightly cranked in the center to align with the street. It stands two storeys high, with attics and a basement. On the first floor, there are three mid-19th century sash windows with divided glazing, set under cambered rubbed brick arches, with the central window being narrower. The ground floor features two similar windows and a central doorway that is raised above four nosed stone steps, flanked by simple wrought-iron railings. The door is an eight raised and fielded panel design, with the lower two panels having arched heads, and is reputedly from Bailey Hall. It includes a plain glazed rectangular fanlight and is surrounded by a rusticated stucco Gibbs surround. The basement windows are recessed and segmentally arched within the plinth. The roof has one box casement dormer on the right side.
At the rear, there are margin glazed French windows on the right, and a projecting rear outshoot on the left that formerly contained a washhouse and stable.
Inside, the drawing room on the right side of the ground floor features a white marble fireplace surround from the 19th century, with a shelf supported by moulded consoles, and a plaster cove and scotia cornice. The staircase has a dogleg plan with a narrower open well, an open string, stick balusters, a moulded handrail, and Tuscan column newels. The cellars have brick paviour and stone flagged floors, with a wine cellar at the rear that includes stone staging and brick support.
