Description

11 and 13 West Street are two houses dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are timber-framed and weatherboarded, with the ground floor of No. 13 and the east flank wall of No. 11 plastered. Both houses have old tiled roofs, with No. 11 featuring a hipped front. A tall red brick chimneystack is located at the rear of No. 11, above a modern lean-to roof covered with pantiles, while No. 13 has a square stack.

The exterior is two stories high. The first floor of No. 11 has a 20th-century triple-light wood casement window with glazing bars. The ground floor includes a 20th-century oriel bay window on the left and a single-light casement window on the right, along with scattered modern windows on the east flank. There is a 19th-century four-flush panel door on the ground floor, topped with a hood supported by cut console brackets. The first floor of No. 13 features a three-light casement window with divided glazing, a recessed four-flush panel door on the left, and 20th-century Yorkshire sash windows on the right, all beneath a continuous weatherboard head.

Inside, the ground floor of No. 11 has been opened up, revealing a central beam with mortices for a now-removed partition. The first floor layout has been significantly altered. No. 11 contains a large ground floor fireplace with a timber bressumer and brick cheeks, set diagonally, along with a beam that has a chamfer, stop, and tongue. The first-floor bedroom is ceiled at collar level and features a Queen strut purlin roof with halved and pegged rafters.
