Description
Bassus Green Farmhouse is a 16th-century house located south of the junction in Walkern. It features a timber frame construction with roughcast walls and steep old red tile roofs, including a half-hipped west end on the kitchen wing. The house is two stories high and consists of three main sections, facing south, with a single-story kitchen to the west and a long dairy wing extending north from the kitchen.
The farmhouse has four structural bays, with the end bays divided into a parlour on the east and service rooms on the west. There was formerly a separate two-bay outside kitchen on the west side, which remains open to the roof and includes a staircase leading to a chamber above the dairy to the north. The lower bay of the hall features a chimney that backs onto the staircase and cross-passage, while an internal gable chimney has been added for the parlour on the east side, and a central chimney has been inserted in the kitchen.
Inside, the farmhouse showcases exposed close-studding and curved tension-bracing in both the house and the dairy wing. It has jowled posts with clasped-purlin roofs, wind-braces, and edge-halved scarf joints with bridled butts in the north wallplate. The kitchen also contains jowled posts, angle-ties, close-studding, and cambered tie-beams, with the east corner posts positioned about 0.5 meters from the house.
