Description

Lovington's Farmhouse is a 16th-century house located on the west side of Dicketts Hill in Great Yeldham, which was extended in the 20th century. The building is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. It is oriented approximately north-south and has an east-facing aspect. The structure consists of a two-bay hall range with an internal chimney stack at the south end, a two-bay crosswing to the north, and a one-bay extension added in the late 16th century, featuring an external chimney stack at the rear. There is also a single-storey rear extension with a catslide roof, along with an additional extension to the rear of the south bay, both dating from the 20th century. The farmhouse has two storeys and attics, with a 20th-century door that has a tiled lean-to hood and a three-window range of 20th-century bays. The south chimney stack features grouped diagonal shafts.

Inside, the farmhouse has jowled posts, heavy studding, chamfered axial beams, and plain joists with a horizontal section. The added north bay includes lamb's tongue stops on the axial beam. The lower room of this bay is lined throughout with oak panelling from around 1590, complete with original cockspur hinges on the panelled door. There are two unglazed windows with diamond mullions in the rear wall, which are enclosed by the 20th-century extension. The roof contains re-used medieval rafters, and the north gable features an 18th-century window with four lights and original rectangular panes, although the casement is missing and it is enclosed by external plaster.
