Description
Number 3 is a house located to the northwest of the junction in Walkern, dating from the 18th century, with an east bay added in the later 20th century. It features a timber frame that is roughcast, with a dark weatherboarded apron and a tall hipped thatch roof. The house is a single-storey structure with a three-cell layout and a central chimney plan, facing south, and includes a matching one-cell extension at the eastern end. A central red brick chimney, located a third of the way from the west end, serves only one fireplace in the middle room. The south front has four windows and a door in the middle. The small flush box sash windows each have a round-headed upper light and a corresponding notch in the overhanging thatch, which was introduced in the 20th century. The interior retains the structure of the former hipped east end, with low walls and rooms that are open to the roof. This house is an interesting example of a surviving rural house type.
