Description
The Thatch is a house located in Therfield, dating from the early to mid 17th century, with later alterations and extensions in the 18th century and 20th century. It features a timber frame with a brick base and roughcast, along with some brick rebuilding. The house has a steeply pitched thatched roof and consists of three bays, which likely included an open hall originally. It is one storey with an attic.
On the ground floor, the entrance is situated to the right of the center, and there are one and two light flush frame casements. The attic has three two-light casements with thatched eyebrows. To the left, there is an early service addition that includes an entrance, a rebuilt brick wall, a slightly lower ridge, and a hipped roof. The left end wall has a horizontal sliding sash window. An inserted axial ridge stack is located to the left of center, while the right gable end features an early three-light diagonal mullioned window. A 20th-century outshut has been added to the right end.
Inside, the house includes a stop-chamfered binding beam, braces in the walling, jowled posts, and a clasped purlin roof.
