Description
Church Gate is a late 16th-century house, originally a single dwelling, which has been altered and extended in the 20th century and is now divided into two dwellings. The house is timber-framed, with rendered and some weatherboarded sections, and has a thatched roof. It comprises a two-storey, two-bay 'hall' range, with a two-storey and attic cross wing to the right.
The front of the building has two entrances. To the left is a three-light flush frame casement window. The first floor is jettied with curved braces to the main bearers, carrying one, two, and three-light flush frame casement windows. The cross wing has a weatherboarded gable with a small attic casement. An axial red brick stack, with four diagonally set flues, rises on the ridge where the hall meets the wing. The right return is also jettied, featuring a dragon beam at the angle and curved braces similar to the front. There is a small-pane horizontal sliding sash window on the ground floor, and a three-light casement window on the first floor. A weatherboarded gable is visible to the rear of the cross wing, alongside a 20th-century outshout. Casement windows are located to the rear of the main range.
A lower, two-bay 20th-century block with a tiled roof has been added to the left, including a lean-to projection to the front and gabled dormers.
Inside, the house features moulded binding beams, close studding, and a clasped purlin roof.
