Description

Greenside Cottage is a house, originally two dwellings, dating from the mid to late 16th century. The structure combines timber framing on a brick base, with rendered and weatherboarded walls and a thatched roof. It was originally a double-ended hall house, later altered to a three-bay lobby entry hall range plan. The house has a single-storey and attic main range and two-storey cross wings.

The entrance is positioned to the right of the centre, accompanied by a single-light casement window to its left. The outer hall bays feature ground floor three-light casement windows, while the attic has dormers with weatherboarded gables. An original axial brick ridge stack rises from the centre of the house, featuring three octagonal shafts. Each cross wing possesses three-light casements on the ground floor and two-light casements on the first floor, which are jettied and ornamented with curved brackets and cusped bargeboards. A second entrance is located to the left.

The right end of the house is weatherboarded and incorporates a 19th-century external stack. The left end has a ground floor three-light casement and a weatherboarded first floor with a horizontal sliding sash window. A wing extending to the left projects further to the rear, featuring a hipped roof over a weatherboarded ground floor and a horizontal sliding sash window on the first floor. The main range to the rear presents casement windows and dormers. The right wing has a catslide roof over a projecting lean-to to the rear, containing an entrance.
