Description

Grey Cottage is a house, now divided into two dwellings, with origins possibly dating back to the 16th century or earlier. It was raised, altered, and extended in the 17th century, with further alterations and extensions in the 20th century. The house is timber-framed and plastered, with a thatched roof. Originally, it was likely a 2 or 3 bay open hall, later with a parlour and entrance bays added to the left to create a 3-cell lobby entry plan. The house is of two storeys. The right-hand dwelling displays a panelled door to the left of centre, a large 3-light casement window to the left, and smaller 2 and 3-light casement windows to the right. The first floor has two 2-light casement windows. A straight joint marks the later bays to the left, which feature a boarded lobby entrance door, 20th-century glazing bar casements, and a small stained glass pane above the entrance. A rebuilt ridge stack is present. The right gable end features an early external stack with a broad base, a small thatched oven lean-to outshut, and a tapering cap. The left gable end has exposed plates and purlins. A 1-storey and attic lean-to addition is located at the rear left. The interior was not inspected.
