Description
Schools Gateway is a former village Reading Room built in 1870. It features a facade made of red brick with ashlar dressings, designed in a classical style. The building has three arched and pedimented bays, with a taller central arch that includes an archivolt with a keystone and impost capitals. The smaller flanking arches have panels inscribed with the words "FAITH" and "HOPE." The facade is supported by four Roman Doric columns on high bases, and the entablature carries pediments, with the central one being larger and having a damaged panel that was formerly inscribed with the word "CHARITY." At the ends of the building, there are consoles supporting the coping. The rear of the building features chamfered relieving arches over the outer arches, key blocked ashlar at the center, and two two-stage buttresses.
