Description
The Post Office and Shop House is an early 19th-century shop with an attached house, situated on the north side of Long Green in Wortham. The building is constructed of clay lump and plaster, with glazed pantiled roofs.
The shop front, which is two bays wide, is tall, rising to two storeys and an attic. The original shop front is located on the right-hand side, featuring steps leading to a central half-glazed door set within a reeded architrave and a small hood. Flanking the door are two shallow bow windows with seven panes to the top five, each framed by fluted pilasters and entablatures. The first floor contains two 16-pane sash windows set in flush moulded frames. A plinth runs along the base, and the roof features boxed eaves. A stack is extruded at the right end, and an attic window is positioned at the left end. A lean-to extension covers the rear, rising to one storey and an attic, with further lean-to outshut additions.
The attached house, to the right, is lower and two storeys high. It has a central 20th-century gabled porch. Flanking the porch and on the first floor are 19th-century three-light glazing bar casements set in part-opening metal frames. An internal stack is located at the right end. The rear of the house also has a lean-to outshut, covered by a continuous roof.
