Description

Elm House is a house dating from the early 16th century, significantly altered and extended in the early 18th century, with further changes in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of timber frame, largely rendered, with areas of weatherboarding and brick casing. The roofs are tiled, incorporating slate. The original 5-window lobby-entry range now faces the garden; a later 4-window range runs parallel to the rear. The house is of two storeys. The original range has a central entrance with a 3-light flush frame casement window. A small bay window is on the ground floor to the right of the entrance, and a single-light casement window is located above the entrance. The original range features coved eaves, and a large original stack with a raised cap sits centrally on the ridge. There’s an extruded stack at the right end. The left end has weatherboarding to the first floor. The later, taller block now forms the entrance front, featuring a wide, projecting 20th-century porch with a panelled door recessed within a pedimented doorcase with side lights. The outer bays have tripartite flush frame sashes on the ground floor. The first floor of the later block has two glazing bar sashes to the centre and tripartite sashes to the outer bays, with dentilled eaves. Slate covers the steeply pitched roof to the front, while the right end is weatherboarded and has an extruded stack. A C19 brick cladding around the originally extruded stack on the left end reveals tumbled brick offsets. The right end, which doesn't extend as far as the earlier range, includes a ground floor outshut with pantile roofing. The interior features ground floor moulded binding beams and a panelled dining room with a dentilled cornice. Two fireplaces with four-centred arches are located on the first floor.
