Description
Saffery Farmhouse is a house, originally part of a hall house, dating back to the 15th century. It is now a house pair but was once occupied as a single dwelling. The house is timber framed, built on a flint base, with exposed timber framing and plaster and painted brick infill. The roof is covered in plain tiles. The original design comprised a central range with jettied cross-wings to the left and right, across four framed bays. The centre range is one storey with an attic, while the projecting cross-wings are two storeys high and jettied. The timber framing on the wings is close studded, and a portion of the central hall range also features this detail. The projecting wings have hipped roofs. There are chimney stacks located in the centre to the right, projecting at the end to the left, and projecting at the end to the right. Two gabled dormers are present in the centre range. The upper storeys of the wings have single wooden casement windows, and the ground floor features wooden casements to the left, the centre, and the centre right, which represent the original screens passage entry. The interior retains crown post roofs in all three ranges, with these posts being tall and octagonal, featuring moulded bases and capitals. A dais beam is also present, along with two service doors in the screens passage; the carved heads on these doors have been plastered over. A moulded four-centred arched door is found in the rear screens passage.
