Puckeridge TL 38 23 STANDON HIGH STREET (east side)

6/11 No 33 (Crown and Falcon PH) 24.1.67 (Formerly listed as The Crown and Falcon) GV II*

Inn. C16, restored in C19. Timber frame roughcast with steep red tiled roof. A large 2 storeyed corner building facing W. Continuous jetty along front and S end with deep moulded bressumer and heavy brackets. 4-centred arched carriageway through N half of building now blocked but with similar smaller arched doorways into each part from carriageway. A deep-plan building probably due to a former rear corridor within the building. 2 large chimneys in front roofslope with paired diagonal shafts (rebuilt). 5 flush box sash windows with 6/6 panes on upper floor of front and hanging signboard on wrought iron bracket. Heavy mullioned and transomed C19 casement windows to ground floor and 2 bar doors panelled and half-glazed. External chimney on S end under jetty with 4 centred doorway and 3-light transomed window to right both with hood moulds. Small flush sash window in gable over and C18 mullioned casement windows to upper floor at rear. On an important corner site in the middle of the village. (RCHM (1911) 69).
