Description

The Gables is a house located in Braughing village, dating from the late medieval period. It features an open hall design with two crosswings and has been extended at the rear. The building underwent alterations in the 17th century and around 1700, with further changes made in the late 18th or early 19th century.

The structure has a timber frame with close-studding visible on the first floor at the front, while the rest is roughcast. The ground floor at the front and below the jetties has been rebuilt in plastered brickwork, and it is topped with steep old red tile roofs. On the south side of the south wing, there are two very large external red brick chimneys serving the parlour and kitchen, along with a large central chimney where the hall connects to the north crosswing.

The east front features a one-and-a-half-storey center with a three-light flat-topped dormer at the eaves, a three-light leaded casement window on the ground floor, and a plank door to the right. The two-storey gabled crosswings have tension braces supporting the former jetties, which are now underbuilt. Each wing has three-light leaded flush casement windows on both floors. The tall chimneys have square shafts, with the central stack set diagonally.

Inside, there is an early 17th-century three-light diamond mullioned window in the staircase of the extended south wing. The framing of the extended north wing features straight tension braces and a clasped purlin roof dating from around 1700. There is also a lean-to rear extension and the jetties were underbuilt around 1800.
