Description

This block of houses, located at 36, 38, 40, 42, and 44 Green End in Braughing village, dates from around 1800. The houses are constructed with a timber frame and are plastered with stucco, featuring a low plinth. They have low pitched slate roofs and form an irregular row divided into three parts, with a carriageway running through the middle section.

All the houses are two storeys tall, but the double-fronted No 44 at the northern end is the tallest. No 42, which extends over the carriageway, is slightly lower, while Nos 36, 38, and 40 are deeper and slightly lower than No 42. The southern part consists of one and a half pairs of small houses, each with one window on each floor and a door positioned away from the fireplace. The windows are flush box sashes, larger on the ground floor, with moulded surrounds and 6/6 panes, while the first floor features 8/8 panes.

The early 19th-century doors are three-panel moulded types with panelled pilasters, corner blocks, and flat-moulded hoods. No 42 has two windows on each floor and a central door, with flush sashes and moulded surrounds featuring 6/6 panes on both levels. It has a reeded surround for its four-panel flush door. No 44 has a symmetrical west front with three windows, similar to No 42, and a six-panel fielded door with a reeded surround, corner blocks, and paterae, topped with a flat moulded hood on shaped brackets.
