Description
Braughing Chapel, also known as the Independent Free Church, is located in Braughing village on Fleece Lane. This chapel is reputed to have originally been John Bunyan's preaching barn from Hitchin, which was moved to Datchett and re-erected at its current site in 1762 by Samuel Copperwheat, a Free Church preacher. The building features plastered timber framing and has a steep tiled roof with gabled ends. It consists of four bays between tie beams, retaining the original principal rafters, purlins, and collars. While it is unclear if the building was initially constructed solely as a chapel, it includes two galleries on the east and west sides, with the pulpit located on the north side; only the gallery at the west end remains. The interior was stripped and rearranged in the 19th century. The exterior is quite plain, with plastered walls and 19th and 20th-century windows positioned high in the walls. There is also a 20th-century gabled south porch and a 20th-century vestry.
