Description

A barn dating to the 16th century, situated 70 metres north of the farmhouse at Whempstead Farm. The barn is timber-framed with a brick sill, and is clad in dark weatherboarding, topped with a steep corrugated iron roof. It has three bays facing south, featuring a central gabled porch on the south side and double doors, with a smaller winnowing door, at the north. There is a blocked opening where double doors once stood. The structure includes heavy jowled posts with curved braces supporting cambered tie-beams, and curved tension braces within the walls. The roof is an inclined queen-post construction with a strainer positioned over the middle of the midstray, and curved wind braces supporting the single purlin on each slope.
