Lych Gate And Churchyard Wall To Church Of St Michael And All Angels

The lych gate and churchyard wall to the Church of St. Michael and All Angels were built between 1871 and 1872 by H. Woodyer. The structure is made of snecked Kentish ragstone with Bath stone dressings. The timber and tiled lych gate features a stone base and a steep gabled head with half hips. It consists of three bays with pointed arches and stone corbels supporting the timber. The sides are open and panelled, with small side buttresses at the rear. The roof includes small lateral gables adorned with timber tracery. There are steps leading up to double panelled gates topped with a cross finial.

The wall surrounds the eastern, northern, and western sides of the churchyard and is approximately one meter high, featuring triangular coping. There are occasional steps leading up to the wall, with more frequent steps on the northern and western sides. Ramps lead up to the lych gate and to an opening in the southwest, which has a shaped iron lamp bracket with scroll ornamentation and a ridge cross. This structure is included for its group value.
