Description

Numbers 40 (Friern) and 42 are a house that was originally three or more dwellings but is now two. It dates from the mid to late 17th century and has been partly refronted, altered, and extended in the 19th century. The building features a timber frame with brick casing and additions, all of which are whitewashed and rendered, topped with a tiled roof.

The house has five windows and is one storey with an attic. The left three bays have a brick front. On the ground floor, there are paired entrances to the left of the centre, with three three-light lattice casements to the centre and left, all set in reveals with slightly cambered heads. To the right, there is a central entrance with a panelled door that has upper leaded glazing and a hood supported by ornamental iron brackets. To the left of this entrance is a two-light lattice casement, and to the right is a three-light casement with a cambered head and flush frames. The building features four three-light latticed gabled dormers, and where the fifth dormer would be to the right of centre, there is a two-light flush frame casement just below the eaves.

A red brick ridge stack is located between the two left bays. The left end of the building is brick-faced with a ground floor casement, while the right end has a single-light casement. At the rear, there are five 19th-century two-storey gabled wings with altered openings, each featuring a cross axial stock brick ridge stack, one of which is located to the right of centre close to the main ridge. There is also a 20th-century flat-roofed entrance outshut to the right.

Inside, number 40 has a 17th-century brick fireplace, chamfered binding beams, and cambered tie beams. Number 42 has not been inspected.
