Description

The Verney is a large house, now serving as an old people's home. It was built in the early 19th century and underwent alterations and extensions in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of stuccoed brick and features a hipped slate roof. It has a three-bay double-depth main block with a two-bay service wing that is set back slightly to the left. The house is two storeys high and has a central entrance that is adorned with a simple pseudo-Doric glazed porch. Inside, there is a four-fielded panelled door with a traceried semi-circular fanlight, flanked by fluted quarter columns leading to a mutule cornice. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes, with those on the ground floor being taller. The exterior includes a plinth, plat band, and cornice, along with pilaster strips at the ends of the main block and boxed eaves. A flat-topped dormer has been inserted in the centre of the roof, and there are two cross axial ridge stacks.

To the left, the service wing has two bays of sashes with a plat band and a separately roofed section. The left end features sashes, a half dormer, and an extruded stack. The right end mirrors the front with two bays. At the rear, there is a ground floor glazed verandah addition to the left, along with a later 19th-century two-bay, one-storey block in the centre that has bracketed window sills, a cornice, and three first-floor sashes with three flat-topped dormers. The service wing extends further to the rear, featuring a half dormer. Attached to the left is a one-storey stock brick pantry with a recessed entrance and a two-light casement window. The interior includes plaster mouldings and an early 19th-century secondary stair. The building was formerly known as Waterford House.
