GREAT AMWELL LONDON ROAD (east side) Hertford Heath Obelisk, at Haileybury and Imperial Service College 40 metres north of South Lodge

South African (Boer) War Memorial Obelisk, 1903 by Reginald Blomfield. Portland stone with applied bronze decorations. Raised on 6 circular stone steps surrounded by 12 moulded stone bollards with bronze collars and chains between. A tall stone obelisk with ball finial raised on a high carved stone base in the Baroque manner with concave curved sides wreathed corner scrolls with helmeted heads, scrolled and wreathed cartouches with winged putti and bellied bronze shields with raised inscriptions. Bronze battle honours on labels on each face of obelisk, applied inscription and 8 ball supports with swags at its junction with the Baroque base, which itself has 4 ribboned wreaths in bronze around its base. In memory of Haileyburians who died in the South African war 1899 - 1902. Set on main axis of entrance front. (Blunt (1966) 19,28).
