Description
The obelisk at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, located 40 metres north of South Lodge, is a memorial dedicated to those who died in the South African (Boer) War from 1899 to 1902. Designed by Reginald Blomfield in 1903, it is made of Portland stone and features applied bronze decorations. The obelisk is raised on six circular stone steps, which are surrounded by twelve moulded stone bollards with bronze collars and chains connecting them.
The tall stone obelisk has a ball finial and is set on a high carved stone base designed in the Baroque style, characterized by concave curved sides, wreathed corner scrolls adorned with helmeted heads, and scrolled cartouches featuring winged putti. The base also includes bellied bronze shields with raised inscriptions and bronze battle honours displayed on labels on each face of the obelisk. At the junction with the Baroque base, there are eight ball supports with decorative swags, and the base itself is embellished with four ribboned bronze wreaths. The obelisk is aligned with the main axis of the entrance front of the college.
