Description
The Old Farmhouse at St Edmund's College is a house dating from the early 17th century. It features a timber frame set on a red brick sill, with roughcast at the rear and 19th-century red brick diagonal nogging at the front. The building has steep old red tile roofs and is designed in a small T-plan, consisting of two storeys. It faces west and has a two-bay hall range that has been reduced to one and a half storeys, with a gable dormer at the rear. There is a two-storey, two-bay north crosswing that projects to the rear.
The farmhouse has a large external side chimney on the north crosswing and a large internal gable chimney on the south side. The entrance features a boarded door beneath a lean-to tiled canopy supported by brackets, with a 19th-century casement window to the right. To the left, the gable of the crosswing includes a 19th-century bargeboard, a slightly projecting casement upper window on brackets, and a gabled rectangular bay window below, which has 19th-century cast iron lattice casements. Inside, the original cross-beam in the hall has a hollow chamfer and bar-stops, supporting chamfered and hollow stopped joists.
