Description

Nos 43 and 45 on Basbow Lane are a pair of cottages that likely originated as a house with non-domestic uses. They date from the 17th century and have undergone alterations in the 18th century, with further changes and extensions made in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed and now plastered, featuring a peg-tiled roof with a central stack made of red brick topped with plain capping, along with 20th-century extensions at the rear.

The structure has a 'T' plan layout, originally consisting of a rectangular pair with a rear addition. The east elevation is two storeys high and has two bays, with the southern end detached. There are doorways at each end, each covered by shallow bracketed hoods. The southern doorway features a reset 18th-century four-panel door with fielded panels, while the northern doorway has a 20th-century four-panel door. Between these doors, there are two windows on each floor, all of which are hornless glazing bar sashes with six over six panes, situated beneath cornice hoods.

The west elevation, which has a catslide roof, rises to three storeys and includes a 20th-century weatherboarded lean-to. There is also a 20th-century extension to the south. Although the interior has not been inspected, the owner has confirmed the presence of exposed timber framing made of oak and elm, including stout primary bracing and a face-halved and bladed scarf joint in the top plate of the south wall.
