Description

This is a pair of houses located on Basbow Lane in Bishops Stortford. They date back to the 17th century, with alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries, and further changes in the 20th century. The houses were originally timber-framed, although the timber framing is now hidden behind plaster. They have a shared brick stack in the centre of the roof ridge and a roof covered in peg tiles. The houses are arranged in a 'T' shape, with the original rectangular section facing the street, and a rear extension.

The east-facing elevation has two storeys, with an attic to number 49. Each house has one bay, containing a doorway, a window, and a small window for the staircase. The doorways have simple 4-panel doors. The windows are sash windows with horns, most with 3-over-3 panes and margin glazing, though one has 2-over-2 panes. Small casement windows at different heights light the staircases.

The west-facing elevation is three storeys high and features a central, two-storey addition dating to the 18th century, which is set under a catslide roof. The interior has not been inspected, but is believed to contain original features, including visible elements of the 17th-century timber frame.
