Description

House. Dating from the 17th century or earlier, this is a timber-framed building, which is either weatherboarded or plastered, and has a steep-pitched roof with old red tiles. The house is long, extending two storeys and facing east. Its weatherboarded gable end is visible from the street. The side walls are plastered, and a single-storey extension, plastered in appearance, is attached to the rear of the east side. The rear part of the west side is weatherboarded and set on a different alignment. A large red brick chimneystack is located on the west side, against the front of the roof. This chimneystack is roofed by an extension of the tiled slope, which is at a lower pitch and emphasized by the bargeboard. The windows are 2- and 3-light wooden casements in flush frames. There is a coved eaves cornice on the east side. Until 1836, the building served as the Hunsdon Workhouse Master’s House. A low wing that ran parallel to the road and was situated behind the house on the east side has since been demolished. It is an historic timber-framed house and is part of a group within the village’s conservation area.
