Description

Shuttles is a row of four houses located on High Street in Hunsdon village, likely built in the late 17th century for widows by Hunsdon Charity in 1697. The houses were altered and extended forward after 1842, as indicated by their setback on the Tithe Map of that year. The northernmost house, No 32, is believed to be an earlier shop building.

The houses are timber-framed and covered in white weatherboarding, sitting on a high red brick plinth with an M-shaped old red tile roof. Each house is two rooms deep and features two large shared chimneys that rise through the ridge of the front roof. The doors are positioned away from the fireplaces, with one front window on each floor above one another. There is a continuous drip board over the ground floor openings, supported by shaped brackets at the door posts. The windows are small-paned wooden casements, with a similar window centrally located above the shop front of No 32, which has reeded pilasters and composite capitals supporting a mutule cornice.

The shop has a central half-glazed door with moulded panels and large three-quarter paned windows on each side. The northern corner of the building is hipped, with the shop range extending back from the street. This row of weatherboarded timber-framed houses is of special interest and contributes to the picturesque character of the Conservation Area.
