Description
Nos. 22 and 24 High Street are a block of two houses that date from the 18th century or earlier, but were reconstructed in the early 19th century. They are timber-framed and weatherboarded, standing on a low tarred brick plinth, topped with a single steeply pitched slated roof. The houses are tall, two stories high, and two rooms deep, featuring central red brick chimneys in the mid-wall. A brick gable wall has been added to the south side. Each house has small two-light mullioned windows, one on each floor, with the windows aligned above one another and doors located near the corners, accessed by two steps. There is a continuous dripboard over the ground floor openings that steps down at the center. The upper floor windows have small paned cast iron casements, although the upper window of No. 22 has been replaced with a wooden frame. No. 22 has a four-panel flush beaded door, while No. 24 features a modern panelled door. These weatherboarded timber-framed houses are of special interest and contribute to the picturesque character of this part of the Conservation Area.
