Description
This early 19th-century village pump and surrounding railing stand in Hunsdon High Street, within the village's Conservation Area. The pump was made by 'Turner, Dorset Street, Fleet Street, London', as indicated by a pedimented raised plate on the base. It is a cast iron public pump facing west, approximately 2 metres high. The structure takes the form of a stepped octagonal pier with a plinth and moulded base. It features a lower section with a heavily modelled animal-headed spout and foliate collar, above which is a taller section with lancet sunk panels and sunk spandrels. A moulded cornice sits above, topped with an ogee cap. An S-shaped cast iron handle, with an oval terminal and projecting horns, is located on the south side. The surrounding railing is largely contemporary, though now much reduced in extent; it is made of cast iron with fluted uprights and spearheads. It is a fine architectural public pump in the Gothic style.
