Description

No. 53 High Street is a former pair of houses that has been converted into one residence. It dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century and was altered and extended at the rear in the early 19th century. The building is timber-framed and roughcast, topped with a steep old red tile roof. It is a long, low, two-storey structure set back between No. 49 and No. 55. A carriageway runs through the ground floor at the northern end, with a room above it. Originally, the building consisted of two houses with mirrored plans, each having one large room on each floor, end chimneys, and a lower, shallow two-storey rear extension covered by a slate roof.

On the upper floor, the front has three widely spaced 19th-century two-light wooden casement windows. A continuous dripboard supported by small brackets runs along the front just above the ground floor windows, which are four grouped taller two-light wooden casements. The carriageway is closed by panelled double doors with Gothic panels set in a heavy timber frame, providing access to the entrance on the side wall. Inside, the house features exposed oak framing and squared pine floor beams. This interesting timber-framed village house is part of a uniform estate village planning scheme established by the Calvert family in the early 19th century and is an important element of the picturesque planned group in the village's Conservation Area.
