Description

41 High Street is a house built in 1837, as indicated by a large panel recessed in the side chimney on the left. The structure features a sawn timber frame with brick nogging and is plastered, topped with a steep old red tile roof. This small two-storey house is connected to the Village Hall group on the right by a high plastered screen wall and presents a symmetrical jettied gable end to the street.

On the left side, there is a tall external red brick chimney with a datestone. The house includes a single-storey canted bay window with a tiled roof facing the Village Hall. The central entrance features a six-panel door with fielded panels, flanked by small upright casement windows. Above, there is a two-light leaded casement window with a label. The heavy cusped bargeboard adds to the architectural detail.

Notably, a pair of richly carved early 18th-century consoles, adorned with undercut swags and shells, are reused to support the ends of the front jetty, which is a significant feature of the house. Deep narrow joists carry the jetty. This jettied house serves as the left-hand pavilion in a formal symmetrical arrangement centered on the former school, now the Village Hall. The corresponding pavilion on the right side, No 49, also features carved early 18th-century brackets supporting its jetty.

This estate village was developed when the Calvert family owned Hunsdon House, making it an important part of the historical context and a key element in the formal symmetrical group centered on the Village Hall.
