Description
Brook Cottage Post Office is a block of two houses built in the mid-19th century, although it does not appear on the Tithe Map of 1842. This tall, roughcast building has two storeys and is designed in an H-plan layout, facing east. It features steep old red tile gabled roofs with heavy cusped bargeboards on the two projecting gables. The roof of the central section extends down to form an open porch. A large gabled central dormer, which shares the same cusped bargeboards, is also present. There are two large cruciform chimneys made of red brick. The central part includes a door and a small window, while the windows throughout are three-light small paned casements. On the ground floor of No 11, there is a rectangular bay window with a tiled lean-to roof. The open porch is supported by arched braces. This pair of picturesque mid-19th century estate houses is part of a balanced group that includes Nos 5 and 7 at the beginning of the Conservation Area. A modern single-storey shop side extension to No 11 is not of special interest.
