Description

This is a late 16th or early 17th century house, later converted to domestic use in the early 19th century. Originally a timber-framed building, it was likely non-domestic in origin. The exterior is characterised by roughcast whitewashed walls with a black weatherboarded apron. It has a steep red pantiled gabled roof and an external red brick chimney on the west side wall. The front gable faces the street, with a central doorway sheltered by a gabled hood, flanked by two small cast iron casement windows with small panes and dripboards on shaped brackets. Two smaller, higher windows are also present in the gable. The east side features two early 19th century wooden windows with rectangular leaded glazing and iron plate casements. Inside, the building retains exposed heavy curved tie beams, with mortices indicating the former presence of braces for a central truss and wind braces for the side purlin roof. It is an interesting timber-framed structure dating from around 1600, which acquired its picturesque appearance in the early 19th century. It forms part of a varied architectural group in the centre of the village Conservation Area.
