Description

22A and 24 High Street is a Grade II listed building that serves as a shop, now converted into offices. It dates back to the 16th century, with a 19th-century rear extension. The structure features a timber frame that is plastered, topped with a steep old tile roof. It is a three-bay, two-storey medieval commercial building with a lofty ground floor. The upper floor is designed as a large room, with the northern bay partitioned. There is a carriageway through the southern bay on the ground floor, which may not be original, and it appears there was no provision for a fireplace in the original building.

The street front includes three flush two-light casement windows that have been renewed and are horizontally proportioned. Below the jetty, there is a deep plaster cove that returns at each end. The central entrance leads to a recessed 20th-century shopfront, while a six-panel door at the left-hand end provides access to the first floor. Inside the carriageway on the right-hand side, and within the shop, there is exposed timber framing along with heavy flat joists and an axial beam, which has mortices for an axial partition in the middle bay. The first floor features chamfered deep cambered tie-beams with chamfered arched braces.
