Description

The Gate House is an early 18th-century house. The street facade was re-faced with grey gault brick in the 19th century. It likely began as accommodation for the Grammar School, formerly located at No. 20. The building comprises two narrow, two-storey blocks extending eastward from the street, each with its own pitched roof parallel to the street.

The front of the house is timber-framed, with a red brick sill, roughcast plaster, weatherboarded cladding and an old red tile roof. The rear section has a slate roof. A rear block has a 18th-century entrance door on the south side, leading up four swept stone steps, featuring a five-panel raised and fielded door, panelled pilaster, and flat hood. Three projecting red brick chimneys are on the south side. The front block has flush box sash windows with 6/6 panes, while the rear block has a three-light mullioned and transomed window with leaded glazing.

The 19th-century street front is of red brick, with a formal three-window arrangement and a parapet. It features recessed sash windows set in sunk panels, defined by pilasters, a plinth, floor band, and eaves band. A four-panel door with a fanlight is located in the carriageway on the north side.
