Description

The Firs is a pair of mid-19th century villas located on Amwell Hill in Great Amwell. These two adjoining houses are constructed of white brick and feature two storeys with a continuous hipped slate roof. They are set back from the road and face east. Each villa has a symmetrical three-window front, complete with a stucco plinth, quoins, flat arches that have raised keystones, and a projecting central flat-topped porch supported by Tuscan columns and pilaster responds, topped with a full entablature and blocking course. The round-headed doorways include fanlights and four-panel half-glazed doors with round-headed lights. The windows are recessed sash types with three-over-three panes. The buildings have a double-pile, double-fronted plan with chimneys located on the party wall. There is a matching two-storey, two-window extension on the south end that is modern. These two fine Victorian villas have seen little alteration and are uniquely built side by side in an isolated setting.
