Description
Amwellbury Lodge is an early 19th-century gatelodge located on the north side of Walnut Tree Walk in Great Amwell. It features painted brickwork and a steep hipped slate roof, with a yellow brick central chimney accented by a red brick band. The lodge is designed as a small two-storey square building with rusticated brick quoins and a projecting floor band. Each face has two windows on both floors, with recessed sash windows that have high gauged brick pointed arches and Gothic intersecting glazing bars in the heads. The ground floor arches include projecting imposts. There is evidence of disturbed brickwork for an earlier door on the south side facing the drive, and a window to the left has a recessed panel below. The rear extension is narrower and two-storeys high, featuring a matching window and door on the east face facing the road, along with a segmental arched window on the upper floor of the west face. This picturesque gatelodge exemplifies the early 19th-century Gothic style.
