Description

Tollgate is a small house, probably from the 17th century. It is timber-framed and plastered on a rendered base, topped with a steep red pantiled roof. The house has a T-shaped layout, facing east, with a main range that has one and a half storeys and a two-storey north crosswing that juts out to the east. The front has been extended under a low extension of the main roof to align with the crosswing. It features two-light and three-light wooden casement windows, and there are gabled, tile-hung dormers on each roof slope. The south gable is faced with 18th-century red brick in header bond, and an external gable chimney has been rebuilt in yellow stock brick. To the right of the chimney, there is a Yorkshire sliding casement. Red brick chimneys are located at the junction of the crosswing with the lower main range on the north wall of the crosswing. The front gable has a plain bargeboard, with applied timbers on the jetty and corners. The house is situated on a steep bank above the road, with an older steep cutting to the rear.
