Description
This bridge, built in 1824, carries Lower Road over the New River in Great Amwell. It is one of a series of prefabricated bridges made from cast-iron girders. The design features perforated spandrels and ornamental keystones that display the date of construction, along with a convex chordal profile. The span of the bridge is approximately 4.5 meters. It is inscribed with the names "New River Co." and "Priestfield Iron Works near Bilston" from Staffordshire. The bridge, which is part of the boundary of Ware Town, has a flat concrete slab for the roadway and a 20th-century handrail that follows the pattern of the original design.
