Description

Sheepcote is a house located on Queen Street in Castle Hedingham, dating from the 17th century or earlier, with later additions and alterations from the 20th century. The building is primarily timber framed and plastered, featuring red plain tiled roofs and seven red brick chimney stacks. It is mainly two storeys high with attics and has a complex plan.

The structure includes a gabled crosswing on the left, a hipped roof range with two hipped dormers and a moulded band under the eaves, two rear ranges, and a right forward crosswing with double gables. The two gables and the right return gable are adorned with heavily carved bargeboards. The first floor has a window arrangement of 1:3:1, while the ground floor features a 1:2:1 arrangement of two or three light casements with transoms.

A central door leads to the hipped roof range and consists of two panels with four lights. There is an open gabled red tiled porch with bargeboards, and to the right, there is a four-panel door with two lights. Attached to the right are three ranges of single-storey red tiled outbuildings, some with lofts. The central range includes a forward gabled crosswing with double doors and a boarded door, along with a loft door above. The interior is said to contain 17th-century panelling, a carved oak chimney piece, old doors, and moulded ceiling beams.
