Description

The Old Vicarage is a vicarage that has been converted into a house, dating from the early 18th century. It incorporates an external chimney and part of the adjoining west gable of a late 17th-century brick house. The northwest wing was likely added around 1795 for Reverend F. E. Say. The building is constructed of red brick with black headers, featuring two upper floors of the northwest wing that are timber framed and plastered. It has old red tile roofs with gable parapets and a hipped roof on the northwest wing.

The main block is double-pile, consisting of two and a half storeys and a cellar, while the upper floor of the three-storey northwest wing is built over an older brick service wing. The unusual plan may be a result of incorporating the earlier structure. The building faces south, with the main rooms located in the west part and a small study in the east part, situated to the right of the entrance. This area is in front of an axial stair that is lit by a round-headed window centrally located on the east end wall.

The former four-window-wide west front has had the upper right two windows replaced by a single window in the late 18th century. Notable features include a projecting brick floor band and a dentilled eaves cornice. The slightly recessed boxed sash windows have segmental arches, moulded architraves, and 6/6 panes, with two windows to the left of the door and one to the right. The late 18th-century half-glazed panelled door is set back with deep panelled reveals, accompanied by a doorcase featuring fluted pilasters and corner blocks.

Inside, early 18th-century features include two-panel doors, H-hinges, and a closed string stair with turned balusters.
