Description
The Nursery Gardens Wall is located at the Panshanger Estate and dates from the early 18th century, likely built for the 1st Earl Cowper when the house was situated nearby at Cole Green Park. The wall is constructed of red brick in English bond and has a hexagonal shape, enclosing an area approximately 100 meters by 60 meters.
On the shorter eastern and western ends, there are arched gateways featuring projecting surrounds, depressed arches with brick keys and impost blocks, and pedimental heads. On the northern long side, there is a similar opening with stock brick piers, an overgrown head, and small doors to the south. The walls rise to a height of 3 to 4 meters and are topped with tile coping. Small clasping buttresses are positioned at the angles, with intermediate buttresses along the long sides.
To the north and west, there are ornamental wrought iron gates adorned with scrolls and foliage, and the upper arches display radiating corkscrews.
