Description

The Old Brewhouse and Sharmane are two houses located in Hertingfordbury, dating from the early to mid-17th century, possibly constructed in two phases, with extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings feature a timber frame with stucco that has been incised to resemble ashlar, and they have tiled roofs. The structure consists of five bays and is two storeys high.

No. 18, The Old Brewhouse, has a three-bay lobby entry on the right side. The ground floor includes a stock brick plinth and an entrance located to the right of centre, featuring a panelled door with a bracketed hood above an architrave. The windows consist of small pane moulded flush frame casements, arranged as 1, 3, and 2 lights. No. 20, Sharmane, is to the left and has a central entrance with a half-glazed door and a bracketed hood above an architrave, flanked by two-light casements. On the first floor, there are five two-light small pane casements.

The buildings have cross axial ridge stacks located behind the right entrance and at the centre, with an external stack at the left end that features offsets. At the rear of No. 20, there is a full-height projecting stair wing with a ground floor entrance and a first-floor two-light casement, along with flanking lean-to outshuts. The rear of No. 18 includes a later two-storey, one-bay gabled wing with a stack to the right and an entrance in a lean-to porch. Attached to the right gable end, which is clad in 20th-century brick, is a lower 20th-century addition.

Inside, there is exposed framing with jowled posts and curved braces. No. 20 has not been inspected.
